Cafes

120 cafes — around twenty in each main area. Ten-thousand-rupiah kopi tubruk on a plastic stool, warehouse brunch rooms, cliff-edge terraces, and the ones down an unmarked lane that you only find because someone told you. Filter by area, style and price.

Tropical cafe in Bali with a fresh coffee

What the dollars mean

  • $ — warung kopi, IDR 8k–20k a coffee
  • $$ — local cafe, IDR 25k–35k
  • $$$ — specialty roaster, IDR 35k–50k
  • $$$$ — brunch spot, IDR 50k–75k plus food
  • $$$$$ — destination views or tasting flights, IDR 80k+

Cafe habits in Bali

  • Most cafes open 07:00–08:00 and the good ones are full by 09:30.
  • Many add 10–16% tax and service. Menu prices marked "++" are before that.
  • Small warungs are cash-only; specialty cafes almost all take QRIS or card.
  • Working all day off one iced latte is normal, but buy something every couple of hours.
  • Ask for "es kopi susu gula aren" if you want the drink everyone local is actually drinking.

Coffee tasting, cuppings and plantations

Indonesia grows some of the world's most distinctive coffee, and Bali is the easiest place to taste it side by side. These are the places to do it properly rather than as a bus stop.

Seniman Coffee Studio

Ubud

Public cuppings and brew classes with a working roastery. You taste Indonesian single origins side by side and learn why one Sumatran tastes like earth and another like grapefruit. The most honest coffee education on the island.

Cost: Cupping from IDR 150k; barista and brew classes IDR 500k–1.2m

Anomali Coffee

Ubud, Seminyak, Kuta

Indonesia's best-known specialty roaster. Order a flight across Aceh Gayo, Toraja, Flores Bajawa, Java and Bali Kintamani to taste the archipelago in one sitting.

Cost: IDR 35k–55k a cup; flights around IDR 100k

Expat Roasters

Seminyak

Roast on site and run structured barista courses — espresso dialling, milk texturing, latte art. Good if you want a skill rather than a souvenir.

Cost: Courses IDR 750k–2m

Munduk & Wanagiri coffee plantations

North Bali

Working smallholder plantations in the highlands. You walk the rows, see cherries on the tree, and taste coffee that was picked a few hundred metres away. Far less staged than the tourist-belt operations.

Cost: Usually free tasting; guided walks IDR 100k–200k

Kintamani coffee estates

Kintamani, Bangli

Bali's own arabica region — grown alongside citrus, which is why Kintamani coffee often has that clean lemony note. Several estates run tastings with volcano views.

Cost: IDR 50k–150k for a tasting flight

Satria / Teba Sari style agro-tourism stops

Tegallalang, Bangli, Ubud outskirts

The classic tour-bus stop: a garden walk, a tasting tray of 10–14 flavoured coffees and teas, and a shop. Fun and free, but it is a retail experience, not a plantation.

Cost: Free tasting tray; luwak coffee charged separately

Kopi luwak — what it actually is

You will be offered it on every plantation tour. Here is the plain version before you pay for a cup.

  • Kopi luwak is coffee made from cherries eaten and passed by the Asian palm civet (luwak). Enzymes in the animal's gut break down some of the bean's proteins, which is said to reduce bitterness.
  • Wild-collected luwak coffee is genuinely rare and expensive — a civet in the forest eats what it likes, and someone has to find the droppings. Almost nothing sold to tourists in Bali is that.
  • The tourist-trail version usually comes from caged civets fed a forced diet of coffee cherries. Nocturnal, solitary animals kept in small wire cages in daylight is the standard picture, and it is why most specialty roasters refuse to sell the stuff.
  • A cup at an agro-tourism stop runs IDR 50k–100k; a 100g bag is IDR 200k–600k. Blind tastings consistently show it is not better coffee — you are paying for the story.
  • If you still want to try it: ask directly whether the civets are wild-sourced or caged, ask to see where the animals are kept, and walk out if there are cages. 'Free-range' signage with cages behind it is common.
  • Better alternative: spend the same money on a single-origin Kintamani, Aceh Gayo or Flores Bajawa from a real roaster. It will taste better and the farmer gets paid.
  • Bringing it home: roasted beans are fine into most countries; green (unroasted) beans are restricted or prohibited into Australia, New Zealand and the US. Declare coffee on your arrival card either way.

More on treating animals well while you travel is on the Animal encounters page.

How to order like you live here

Kopi tubruk

Coarse grounds and sugar with hot water poured straight over — the classic Indonesian brew. Let it settle for two minutes and do not drink the last centimetre.

Kopi susu

Coffee with sweetened condensed milk. Iced kopi susu gula aren (with palm sugar) is the drink of the moment across Indonesia.

Kopi Bali

Usually a robusta or robusta-arabica blend, dark roast, often with a little corn or rice roasted in. Strong and traditional rather than delicate.

Kintamani arabica

Bali's own highland arabica, grown among citrus trees on volcanic soil. Clean, light-bodied and slightly lemony.

Aceh Gayo / Sumatra

Wet-hulled processing gives the heavy, earthy, herbal cup most people think of as 'Indonesian coffee'.

Flores Bajawa

Chocolatey and nutty with low acidity — the crowd-pleaser of the Indonesian origins.
