Adventurous Bali

Activities, prices and seasons

Prices are typical 2026 walk-up rates per person unless noted, usually including hotel transfer within 45 minutes. Booking direct with the operator is normally cheaper than a hotel desk or a street tout.

White water rafting — Ayung River

Beginner / families (usually 7+)

Payangan, north of Ubud

Class II–III, about two hours and 10km through a jungle gorge past carved rock walls and waterfalls. Gentle enough for first-timers and kids, and the classic Ubud half-day. Expect a few hundred steps back up at the end.

White water rafting — Telaga Waja River

Intermediate (usually 12+)

Karangasem, east Bali

Class III–IV with faster, continuous water, a 4m dam drop at the end and Agung views. Longer drive from the south, considerably more exciting than the Ayung.

Price: IDR 450–700k pp
Season: Best Dec–Apr; low water Aug–Oct

Canyoning

Fit beginners to advanced

Gitgit, Kerenkali, Aling-Aling (north Bali)

Abseiling waterfalls, jumping into plunge pools and sliding natural chutes with a certified guide and full kit. Bali's best-run adventure sport — operators are internationally certified and cancel readily in bad water.

Price: IDR 1.1–1.9m pp
Season: Dry season safest; cancelled after heavy rain

Mount Batur sunrise trek

Moderate — 2 hrs up in the dark

Kintamani

A 2am pickup, head torches, and volcanic scree to a 1,717m rim for sunrise over Abang, Agung and Lombok. Eggs cooked in steam vents at the top. Genuinely cold before dawn — bring a jacket.

Mount Batur 4WD sunrise

Everyone — no hiking

Kintamani lava fields

Open-top Land Cruiser or Jimny up the black lava field to the sunrise viewpoint. The answer if you want the view without the climb, or you're travelling with kids or knees that object.

Season: Year-round

ATV / quad biking

Beginner

Ubud, Payangan, Pererenan, Nusa Dua

Rice-field tracks, river crossings, jungle tunnels and a lot of mud. Bring clothes you don't care about; most operators supply boots, helmet and a shower.

Price: IDR 500k–1m single, 700k–1.4m tandem
Season: Year-round — muddiest and most fun in the wet

Surfing

Complete beginner to expert

Kuta, Canggu, Uluwatu, Medewi, Nusa Dua, Keramas

Beginners: the sand-bottomed beach breaks at Kuta, Seminyak, Batu Bolong and Medewi. Experienced: the reef points of the Bukit — Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin, Impossibles — which are shallow, sharp and not the place to learn.

Price: Lesson IDR 350–600k; board hire 50–150k/day
Season: West coast Apr–Oct; east coast Nov–Mar

Scuba diving

Try-dive to technical

Tulamben, Amed, Menjangan, Nusa Penida, Padang Bai

The Liberty wreck at Tulamben from the beach, walls at Menjangan, drifts and mantas at Penida, and cold upwellings that bring oceanic sunfish in the middle of the year. Check the shop is PADI/SSI affiliated and ask when the gear was last serviced.

Price: 2 fun dives IDR 1–1.8m; Open Water course 5–7m
Season: Apr–Nov best visibility; mola-mola Jul–Oct

Snorkelling & freediving

All

Amed, Menjangan, Blue Lagoon, Nusa Lembongan

Shore snorkelling straight off the black sand in Amed, boat trips to the Penida mantas, and a growing freediving scene in Amed and Lembongan with proper depth courses.

Price: IDR 150–500k; freedive course from 2.5m
Season: Year-round; calmest mornings

Paragliding

Tandem — no experience

Timbis / Nyang Nyang, Bukit peninsula

Coastal soaring along the Bukit cliffs above Timbis with the sea directly below. Short flights, big view, weather-dependent and often cancelled at short notice.

Season: Jun–Oct dry-season sea breeze

Bali Swing, sky bikes & zip lines

Everyone

Ubud, Bongkasa, Aloha (Blangsinga)

Gorge swings, glass platforms, nests and zip lines over the jungle. Very much a photo activity — see the photo spots page for timing and outfit notes. Check for a harness and a second safety line before you get on.

Cycling & downhill rides

Easy — mostly downhill

Kintamani to Ubud, Jatiluwih, Sidemen

Van up to the crater rim, then a gentle 25km roll down through villages, bamboo forest and rice terraces with stops at family compounds. One of the best-value half-days on the island.

Trekking — Agung, Batukaru, Sambangan

Hard to very hard

East, central and north Bali

Mount Agung is a 6–8 hour night ascent of Bali's 3,031m volcano and needs real fitness and a licensed guide. Batukaru is a quieter cloud-forest climb, and Sambangan a jungle waterfall trek with jumps and slides.

Watersports at Tanjung Benoa

Everyone

Tanjung Benoa / Nusa Dua

Parasailing, jet ski, banana boat, flyboard, sea walker and glass-bottom boats packed into one strip. Cheerfully touristy, safe, and the easiest place to entertain teenagers for a morning. Negotiate a bundle price.

Kitesurfing & wing foiling

Beginner to advanced

Sanur, Serangan

Flat, shallow lagoon water inside the Sanur reef on the dry-season trade wind. Schools cluster along Mertasari and out at Serangan.

Sea kayak & SUP

Beginner

Sanur, Amed, Lembongan mangroves

Glassy dawn paddles over the Sanur reef flats, sunrise kayaking off Amed with Agung behind you, and mangrove channels on Lembongan.

Season: Year-round, early mornings

What's where

Base yourself near the thing you actually came to do.

Ubud & central

Rafting on the Ayung, ATV, swings and sky bikes, downhill cycling, jungle treks, canyoning day trips north. The adventure base if you're not chasing surf.

Canggu, Seminyak & Kuta

Beginner surf beach breaks, surf schools and skate parks, plus easy transfers for Ubud rafting and Batur sunrise pickups (expect a 1.30–2am start).

Uluwatu & the Bukit

Serious reef surf, cliff paragliding at Timbis, coasteering-style cove walks, and the calm Tanjung Benoa watersports strip 25 minutes away.

Sanur & Nusa Dua

Kitesurfing, SUP and kayaking on flat lagoon water, dive boats to Penida, and family-friendly everything.

East Bali — Amed, Tulamben, Sidemen

Shore diving and freediving, Telaga Waja rafting, Agung and Lempuyang treks, quiet cycling roads.

North & west — Munduk, Lovina, Pemuteran

Canyoning, waterfall trekking, Menjangan diving and national park walks. Cooler, greener and far fewer people.

Picking an operator without getting burned

  • Ask what the guide-to-guest ratio is, and whether guides are certified (river rescue, PADI/SSI, canyoning association) — good operators answer instantly.
  • Look at the gear before you pay: helmets that fit, buoyancy aids with working buckles, harnesses with visible inspection tags, serviced regulators.
  • Confirm what's included — transfer, lunch, entry fees, insurance, photos — and whether photos are an extra IDR 200–350k at the end.
  • Your travel insurance may exclude rafting, diving, quad bikes and anything on a motorbike without the right licence. Check before, not after.
  • Operators who never cancel for weather are the ones to avoid. Rain, swell and water levels should change plans.
  • Pay cards where possible for big-ticket bookings; keep cash for tips (IDR 50–100k per guide is generous and normal).

Dress code and what to bring

Water activities

  • Quick-dry shorts and a rash vest — sun on the water is brutal
  • Secure sandals or old trainers; flip-flops are lost in the first rapid
  • Reef-safe sunscreen and a hat you can tie on
  • Waterproof pouch for your phone, plus a dry change of clothes
  • No loose jewellery, and glasses on a strap

Volcano, treks and 4WD

  • Batur before dawn is 10–14°C — fleece or jacket, long trousers, gloves if you feel the cold
  • Grippy closed shoes; volcanic scree destroys canvas sneakers
  • Head torch (operators supply one, bring a backup) and a power bank
  • Dust buff or mask for the 4WD lava fields
  • If the route passes a temple, carry a sarong — Agung and Batukaru treks start at temple grounds and require respectful dress
